40 Ways to Improvise, Adapt and Innovate (40 Thoughts from 40 Years…)

Happy birthday to me!

Yes, today I turn 40 years old (wow, a milestone!). To celebrate my 40 years on this planet, below I have listed “40 ways to improvise, adapt, and innovate.” Hopefully they will help you take your life or business to the next level – and beyond!

Improvise: How to React to Ding Moments

  1. Great creativity comes not from being full of ideas, but from being empty, observant, and in the moment
  2. When Ding Happens, saying, “yes, but” is whining. “Yes, And” leads to proactive solutions.
  3. You can laugh or cry; your choice won’t change the situation. So why not laugh?
  4. High emotion blocks creativity. So take a minute to calm the heck down before you take stupid action out of fear.
  5. To increase productivity, decrease stress, and improvise effectively, focus on what you can control and let go of the rest.
  6. The ultimate goal of the improviser is artistic self-expression (paraphrased from BruceLee)
  7. Improvising quickly about training reflexes; anyone can do it. It just takes practice.

The (Real) Life of Pi

Today is March 14th, which means it’s National Pi Day! (March 14 = 3/14. Get it…?)

In honor of this ridiculous holiday I, along with my wife Amanda and my friend Fred Gleeck made a fun video about the real life of Pi. Enjoy watching and please share!

Something is Better than Nothing

Pop quiz hotshot: would you rather:

  • Have $0 or $0.50?
  • Burn 50 calories or no calories?
  • Spend 10 minutes a day doing something fun or no minutes a day?

These seem like obvious trick questions right? Maybe, maybe not…

I was walking back to my car from a dinner event in downtownPhiladelphialast night when I was approached by a (what I assume was) homeless woman who said, “Can I get some change for a sandwich?”

I’ll admit that when downtown I often have the default response of saying “sorry” and walking on. This time, perhaps inspired by the lingering “holiday good cheer,” I reached into my pocket, pulled out some change, and reached out to give it to her. It wasn’t much, but it was the change I had.

She looks at the 3 coins in my outstretched hand and says, “I need enough for a sandwich.”

What.

The.

Heck??

Am I seriously being negotiated with? By someone asking for change??

I look at her and say, “This is what I have. Do you want it?”

She looks back at me and simply says, “I need enough for a sandwich.”

It was late and cold, and I wasn’t going to go digging around for more, so I said, “sorry,” and walked on.

I have no idea if she ever got her sandwich…

The Lesson:

Beware of fixating on the “perfect” solution!

Yes, it would have been great for her if I had given her $5 for a sandwich. But by fixating only on that response she ended up with nothing. My change, combined with the change of a few other people would have given her enough for what she wanted.

It’s easy for the rest of us to fall into similar traps in our own lives and businesses:

  • Getting so focused on landing the “big client” that we ignore the low hanging fruit that can generate cash and connections
  • Committing so strongly to taking “massive action” – like working out for 2 hours a day –  that when schedules and situations don’t give us the luxury of following through, we do nothing and resolve to “do better tomorrow”
  • Being so obsessed with acquiring an ideal job/gift/house/mate/etc. that we become unable to see the wonderful aspects of the job/gift/house/mate/etc. that we do have.

There are certainly instances where you are better off doing nothing than doing the wrong thing.

However, in many cases, we would all be better served letting go of the ideal perfect cases and remembering that doing or getting something is usually better than doing or getting nothing.

As fellow speaker Scott “Q.” Marcus says in the below TEDx video, “It makes a lot more sense to get up right now and walk a block than to swear I’m going to run a mile and sleep in tomorrow.”

No if you’ll excuse me, I have to go make myself a sandwich…

Motivational Humor: Stupid Things People Do In Horror Movies

You know who’s stupid? People in horror movies. So many horror movies rely on characters doing stupid things to get going or keep going. But their stupidity is our gain, as we can learn a lot about how to make our lives better (even in a non-horror movie survival sense) by simply not doing the stupid things they do…[Read more]

Halloween Humor – Get Dressed to Thrill!

Halloween is upon us! As an adult, I am assuming you are not going trick or treating (although I think we do need a holiday where adults can walk door to door and get free stuff – not candy, but something fun for adults like DVDs or mutual funds). However, you may find yourself invited to a Halloween costume party. If you plan to attend one you will need a costume. Picking one can be a high stress activity, but have no fear! It’s really quite simple. You have three basic costume options when it comes to dressing up for Halloween: Funny, Serious, or Sexy. How to be a Master of the Unexpected in 9 Simple Steps

You may have noticed that I have been a tad remiss in updating this blog. I haven’t gone into witness protection or been abducted by aliens; no I’ve just been a little busy. You see, I just got married this summer! As you can probably guess, things got very busy and I got a little sidetracked. But now I’m back, and it’s time to get back into the swing of things!

One other thing that has been occupying my time is writing a new keynote and creating a new website.

The website is almost done, but the keynote has been finished and presented. Below are 9 points I make in the presentation (grouped into 3 categories) about how to react to, take advantage of, and create unexpected opportunities in business and life.

The focus of a great deal of my upcoming content will fall either specifically into one of these 9 categories, or into the broader points of improvisation and quick thinking.

(If you have an event coming up and would like to talk about bringing this new keynote to your group, give me a call – 484-366-1793 – or send me an email now!)

If you would like more info on any of the topics below, please let me know in the comments – that will let me know what to do for my future articles.

Ding Happens!

How to React to, Take Advantage of, and Create Unexpected Moments in Business and Life

Things will go wrong. Anyone can do well when everything goes exactly as planned. The real test of you and your organization is how well you deal with the unexpected (“Ding!”) when they happen – because they will! The following 9 ideas will show you how to not only react to the Dings of life, but also how to find opportunities within them and to be a leader of change, not just a victim of it.

Reacting to Dings!

When Ding Happens, do you make stupid mistakes, do you get paralyzed, or do you react in a way that keep you on track?

1)      Focus on What You Can Control, Let Go of the Rest. Putting time and energy on things you can’t control is like standing in a storm, yelling at the wind to stop. It accomplished nothing and just tires you out. Great improvisers put their attention on one thing: what they can do right here, right now, only with what they have.

2)      Have Fun. Having fun, laughing, and staying positive reduces stress, increases creativity, and makes you more able to stay calm and take logical action. Find a way to stay up, even when things are down.

3)      Be Willing to Fail. Failure isn’t ok; it usually has serious consequences. However, focusing on the fear of failure achieves nothing but taking our focus off of the only things that matter: the activities that ensure we won’t fail!

Taking Advantage of Dings!

Every Ding has an opportunity hidden inside of it. If you want to move from merely putting out fires to truly making progress, then use these three techniques to starting finding those opportunities.

4)      Improve the Status Quo. When Ding Happens, your first response may be to try to get back to where you were before things went haywire. However, that just keeps you at the “treading water” place. To take advantage of Dings, start asking yourself, “How can I get to a place that is better than where I was before?”

5)      Act with Gusto. Great improvisation is about taking action; improv comedy is not a tentative person’s art form. Don’t do something foolish (like gambling away your savings) but don’t let opportunities pass you by because you are afraid to take action.

6)      Say, “Yes, And!” Simply put, when Ding Happens, stop saying “yes, but” and start saying “Yes, And!” A principle so important I wrote a whole book on it: “Say ‘Yes, And!’”

Creating Your Own Dings!

If you want to be a leader in your industry or organization, or if you simply want to break out of a rut, get past a plateau, or achieve a goal you have been struggling with, then you may need to start creating some Dings of your own.

7)      Add Constraints. Constraints are generally seen as a bad thing. However, adding constraints (trying to do things with less time, money, energy, etc) is one of the best ways to increase creativity and force productivity.

8)      Increase Complexity. I know, I know: We all want our lives to be simpler, not more complex. But the simplicity you seek may very well be on the other side of greater complexity. For example, if you want to make more money, you may need more education. More education means spending money, juggling schedules, filling out applications, and adding more work to a full calendar. That’s more complex. And yet, beyond that complexity are the results you want…

9)      Apply Creativity. Creativity is a big topic. In this context, it comes down to doing one of two things: doing something that hasn’t been done before, or doing something that has been done before in a different way. Start asking yourself, “what if?” “Why not?” and “what I am afraid of doing?” Those questions will open your creative mind and help you become a Ding Maker!

There you have it. Let me know your thoughts, and let me know which ideas you would like me to explore further.

Motivational Cliches and Improv Comedy

Here’s a video clip of me performing as part of a Comedy Night at the National Speakers Association:

(Note: the video starts out wobbly for some reason, but then straightens out)

The theme of the night was “Whose Cliche is it Anyway?” All the participants were given 8 “motivational cliches” and we each had to weave those into our own motivational speech.

I decided to perform mine improv comedy style.

(Note: If you like this video and plan meetings, or know someone who plans meetings, then check out my speaking info. This game is a variation of what I open my presentations with…)

For the record, the eight cliches are:

  • Sell the sizzle, not the steak
  • Think outside the box
  • Check up from the neck up
  • We become what we think about
  • Awaken the giant within
  • You¹ve got to be hungry
  • Build a bigger pie
  • Think and grow rich

Enjoy!

A Critical Marketing Lesson from My Bachelor Party

Note: Not an actual picture from the bachelor party...

Pop quick hotshot: when you hear the words, “bachelor party,” what’s the first thing that comes to mind?

If you said, “strippers,” then you’re like most people. If you said, “a Tom Hanks movie,” you probably need to get out and see more movies…

I recently had what many people would consider to be “an incredibly lame bachelor” party. There were no strip clubs, no exotic dancers, and wives and girlfriends were even allowed to attend for some of the activities – and that included my fiancée!

And you know what? It was perfect. I loved it, I had a great time, and it was exactly what I wanted (which is the point, right?)

I have a great group of friends, none of whom minded that we didn’t do some of the traditional bachelor party “stuff.” Like me, they just enjoyed the opportunity to spend a weekend hanging out together.

My fiancée knew we had no strip clubs planned for the weekend, and she was a tad concerned that I would one day look back on the event and regret not doing the strip club thing (I won’t).

She pulled my best man aside and told him that he really should take me to a strip club that weekend (yes, she’s pretty awesome. Unless you consider the possibility that she was planning on attending an “all male revue” for her bachelorette party and might have been worried that she would feel guilty if I didn’t do something similar. Nah, that couldn’t be the case…)

Now my best man was torn between what I told him I wanted to happen at my bachelor party and what my fiancée told him she wanted us to do.

At one point, he brought it up:

“You know, if you want, we could still go to a strip club.”

“No, I’m good. I don’t think we need to do that,” I said.

He went on, “well, yeah, but Amanda really seemed like she wanted to make sure you went to one, and I want to make sure she’s happy.”

Clearly he cares as much or more about keeping my fiancée happy as he does about keeping me happy. Smart man…

I of course was having none of that.

“That’s dumb,” I said.

Seeing that my words needed further explanation, I continued.

“Look, I get it. But at the end of the day, the bachelor party is about me having a good time. And I don’t think a strip club is going to accomplish that. Let me worry about what’s going to make her happy.”

Game, set and match. We skipped the strip club and had a great time.

The Marketing Lesson

So what’s the big marketing lesson from this? Easy:

To be successful, you must identify your customer’s wants and needs and then fill them.

Simple, right?

In my story, I was the customer (selfish I know, but it was my bachelor party so it makes sense that it be geared to making me as happy as possible, right?)

Attending a strip club was what others wanted. It was what some felt we should do. And it was something that I explicitly said I didn’t want to do.

It seems pretty obvious when we’re talking about a bachelor party. But I have heard tales of best-men and friends setting an agenda of what “should” happen, or what they want to do, and the bachelor himself ends up having a pretty bad time.

The same thing happens to small business owners when marketing their business as well.

Instead of identifying their ideal client and then uncovering and satisfying their needs, they get caught up in trying to sell what they themselves believe their potential client needs. Or worse, they just sell what they want to sell. Then they wonder why the heck they are having such a tough time building their business.

It’s actually pretty simple: figure out what your target customers want and then offer it to them. Get out of your own head and stop focusing on what you think they want.

If they want strippers, give them strippers. If not, then don’t. Put your focus on what your prospects and clients want, and you’ll be well on your way to business success.
